Teaching automation with Factory I/O under a competency-based curriculum

چکیده
Abstract Some of the most critical competencies students need to acquire become control engineers require performing practices under actual industrial conditions. This means that they must not only master theoretical aspects discipline but also skills and attitudes face unpredictable real-world situations. Software tools such as Matlab/Simulink are widely used train design validation controllers, fail provide real contexts. Nowadays, there 3D simulation support recreating environments a remarkable extent, making them very attractive for university courses. Nevertheless, their application in engineering courses is scarce yet. paper presents methodological framework seizing into competency-based one these tools, called Factory I/O. Our approach was evaluated master’s course on Industrial PID Control at Pontifical Catholic University Valparaíso (PUCV) Chile. The evaluation comprised qualitative analysis students’ grades over four consecutive editions study opinion I/O educational value. objectives our were (i) testing if helped develop hard practice academic contexts, detecting faults or recognizing importance having well-defined operation protocols; (ii) validating methodology courses; (iii) surveying about strengths/weaknesses teach engineering. According results, (a) complements Simulink by providing an adequate virtual environment learn aforementioned skills; (b) supports courses’ continuous improvement through statistical achievements different abstraction levels.

Competency-Based Curriculum: Linking Theory and Practice
Background and objective: Most higher education curricula do not provide the competencies graduates need in the occupational fields, resulting in waste of money and lower effectiveness while increasing the number of unemployed graduates. Competency-based education is an innovative educational model that can solve such problems and lead education activists to design competency-based curricula. T...
متن کاملDesigning Gesture-Based Control for Factory Automation
We report the development and evaluation of a gesture-based interaction prototype for controlling the loading station of a factory automation system. In this context, gesture-based interaction has the potential to free users from the tedious physical controls but it must also account for safety considerations and users’ perceptions. We evaluated the gesture interaction concept in the field to u...

Latency in Factory Automation
Latency is a critical parameter in Ethernet networks developed for Factory Automation applications. Latency is not a defined value for Ethernet as specified by the IEEE 802.3 standard. Nor is Ethernet inherently synchronous or repeatable. This disconnect between the inherent characteristics of Ethernet and the needs of Factory Automation applications must be bridged though careful architecture ...
